I'll start with some alumni news:
Former Orioles outfielder Lou Montanez signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs, according to this tweet from Baseball America's Matt Eddy. The Cubs made Montanez the third overall pick in the 2000 draft.
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez was taken first by the Florida Marlins. The Minnesota Twins used the second pick on right-hander Adam Johnson.
You must remember that the Orioles used the 14th pick on University of Texas pitcher Beau Hale.
See how many names you recognize on this list of first-round picks in the 2000 draft.
The Cleveland Indians announced that they've hired former manager Mike Hargrove as a special adviser. You can read more about it right here.
Hargrove wants to manage again, but at least he's back in the majors.
Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters yesterday that he's confident that he'll be able to trade pitcher Armando Galarraga, who was designated for assignment yesterday. Enough teams have expressed interest.
As I wrote yesterday, the Orioles don't appear to be one of them. An official wouldn't completely rule it out, but there wasn't much enthusiasm for Galarraga.
The right-hander gained a lot of attention for his near-perfect game. Beyond that, he wasn't very impressive, and the Orioles seem likely to pass.
The only reason that the door hasn't been slammed and nailed shut is because the free-agent market is underwhelming - it isn't exactly full of "Cy Youngs," as someone in the organization joked - and there aren't an abundance of trade options. An official confirmed that the Orioles had serious interest in Cubs left-hander Tom Gorzelanny and engaged in trade talks before a deal reportedly was struck with the Washington Nationals.
Here's another look at the starting pitchers still on the market. Don't bother with Carl Pavano, who's about to re-sign with the Twins. The Orioles were never in on him. You can forget about Andy Pettitte, too. You'll find that most of these guys have been injured or just plain bad:
